help with over heating problem??? Empty help with over heating problem???

Post by teambarreras Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:00 pm

Hey all! I need help as to why i have gone through 4 titan 12t motors in 2 weeks in 4 different trucks... im new to the hobby and cant figure out what im doing wrong. Also dont have the money to go brushless quite yet so looking for other suggestions... first one i cooked was in my daughters brand new slash but it was after i put the high speed gears in it that came with the truck... second one was in my stampede with a 19 86 ratio.. the third in my hpi blitz with 20 86 ratio and the fourth in my losi xxx with 16 86 ratio... any suggestions as to why i cant keep a motor in these things??

Im not familiar with the gearing in those trucks but my first guess is going to be heat. Spend $25-$35 on a heat gun to temp your motors with. You can get one for about the cost of one titan motor. Run the truck for about 5 min and check the temp on the motor. You should be under 200 if you are getting high temps you really need to gear down and just deal with a slower truck until you can afford to go brushless. If your pushing 200 after 5 min with a motor that was completely cooled off before you started your geared to high in my opinion

Ya i know that was the problem with the slash cause i went 23 86... but the other trucks caught me off gaurd especially the xxx with 16 88 i thought that was pretty low ratio but cooked in like 5min... too damn hot out for them without a fan???

also with the motors off check to make sure your transmissions spin freely. extra drag from a bad bearing or something can also heat up a motor.

how about the gear mesh?? it could be off just a bit . that would cause it to heat up fast also. maybe some binding in the diff or tranny... scratch good luck

You mean i might have my pinion to tight to the spur gear?? I think i do run them kinda tight cause im nervous about them being to loose a chewing up my spur gear... i will try that.. thanks man

That's a good point. Place a piece of paper between your pinion and spur to set your gear mesh.
